Vajreshwari Temple Mumbai

Located at Vasai Road in Mumbai, Vajreshwari temple is just a one hr. drive from Mumbai and is one of the peaceful and oldest temples of Maharashtra. The full name of the temple is Shree Vajreshwari Yogini Devi Mandir. Town Vajreshwari is situated on bank of river Tanasa, in Bhiwandi city. The Vajreshwari town was earlier known as Vadvali. It is 27km. from Virar. There are legendaries of Vajreshwari Devi.
1) The legend has it that Parshurama performed a Yajna (fire offering prayer) at Vadvali and the hills of volcanic ash in the area were its residue. The primary deity of the temple whose name was Vajreshwari(vajreśvari), also spelled called as Vajreshwaram or Vajrabai and Vajrayogini was believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Parvati on earth. Her name literally means “the lady of the Vajra (thunderbolt)” and hence came the Vajreshwari Temple which has such a history associated with it.

2) Original temple of at Gunj which is 8 km. away from Vadvali, ChimajiAppa, brother of Peshawa Bajirao I, set camp in Vadvali region it was in the way to conquer the fort of Vasai from Portuguese, he fought for more than 3 years, then ChimajiAppa prayed Devi Vajreshwari for giving him success in getting back fort of vasai from portuguese control. Then Devi appears in his dream and guided him how to conquer fort. Thus he got success and in celebration of conquering fort and vow completion, he builded temple of Devi by ordering his governer.

Mandir by climbing 52 steps. There six other murties in Mandir with Vajreshwari Devi,  such as Renukamata, Saptashrungi Devi, Vyagreshwari Devi , Kalikamata, Shri Ganesh, Hanuman, Bhairav dev, Kapileshwar Shivlinga, Dattatray murti.The Town of Vajreshwari is located on the bank of river Tansa, in Thane Distr. The main gate entrance of mandir has Nagarkhana builded by Gayakwad ,Maratha Dynasty. And stone steps and Deepmal (Tower of lights) builded  by Nanasaheb Chandavadkar, moneylender from Nashik. The temple is surrounded by stone wall like a Fort.

Some attractions :

The temple celebrates RamNavami, Navratra of Devi and Dasara. A fair is conducted in honour of Vajreshwari devi on every Chaitri Amavasya (New Moon Day). One day before Amavasya there is ceremonial worship of Devi Vajreshwari and one day after Amavasya ceremonial procession i.e. Palakhi is taken out.  Some other days are also celebrated here such as Kojagiri Pornima, Diwali, Holi, Datta Jayanti, Hanuman Jayanti and Sant Godhadebua Jayanti.

There are 21 hot water Kundas in 5 km. radius of Mandir. According to traditional view, hot water is blood of demon who were killed by Devi.

How to go here:

There is bus No. 303 from Virar Railway station to Virar Phata and No.131 from Virar Phata- Vajreshwari. It is 27 km. from Virar station.
