Mahurgad

Mahurgud Darratreya Temple also called as the Mahur Datta Mandir is one of the most famous and oldest Dattatreya temples of  Nanded Distr. in Maharashtra. It is also believed that Mahur was the birthplace of Guru Dattatreya. Lord Dattatreya was the son of goddess Anusuya who is also highly worshipped in Maharashtra.
Also Datta pournima is one of the biggest festivals which is celebrated with pomp and its fully glory at this temple & its worth attending during that time. Thousands of visitors from different corners of Maharashtra make it a point to visit during this time. Also for a fact, this temple is amongst the two shakti peeths of Dattatreya and holds a lot of spiritual and mythological significance in Maharashtra.

There are three mountains (गोपुरे) in Mahur. The first one is having Renukamata Temple, who is mother of the god Parashuram. Other are Datta Mandir and Anasuya Mandir (Mother of Lord Dattatray). The story behind this Renukamata temple is, one day King Sahasrarjun came in hartmitage of Jamadagni Rushi, with help of Kamdhenu (Cow) Rushi gave treat to king and his followers. Sahasrarjun asked Jamadagnimuni how you could manage such a good treat for us in your harmitage , king come to know it is possible due to cow, king demanded Kamdhenu from Jamadagni. Jamadagni rishi refused so king first requested and then killed muni. While rushi’s wife Renuka mata came to request king that pl. don’t demand cow from us. But no use. After this incidence Parashuram, son of Jamadagni and Renuka came to know the cruelty of King. And he went and killed king. The King was big devotee of Lord Dattatray. This is the place where Renukamata burned herself  with deadbody of Jamadagni. Then Parashuram did Anteshti (Last rituals after death) After Renukamata had gone Sati, Parashuram cried that time Lord Dattatray told him not to worry your parents are Shiv and Paravati and they are here only. But Parashuram requested that he want to see his mother and cried. So the mouth of Renukamata came from land. So here instead of original murti, there is only mukh(face) of Devi. Mahur has a sacred temple to Renuka Mata, which is one of the 3 Shaktipith of Devi in the Maharashtra state.

There are 200-250 steps to reach Renukamata temple.
